Gun Doorknobs

I doubt we would ever have this in our home, but if Doug ever gets an underground bunker, he might want some.

Anti-gun Group to Boycott Starbucks on Valentine's Day

I only have one word for this....ridiculous.

Article from TheNewAmerica.com (I've never read their site before and there are many other articles about this boycott, but this sums it up quickly):

Elliot Fineman, CEO of the National Gun Victims Action Council (NGAC) announced last Monday that its members will boycott Starbucks starting on St. Valentine’s Day to protest the company’s resistance to demands that they cease serving customers who may be carrying weapons, open or concealed. Its purpose, according to Fineman, is “to eliminate the risk of guns in public places and ultimately to bring sane gun laws to the U.S.” Fineman claims that his group is “a network of 14 million gun victims” and that his boycott is being supported by the Episcopal Peace Fellowship, the United Church of Christ, the Fellowship of Reconciliation along with other secular groups that also support the anti-gun movement. Fineman said:

Starbucks allowing guns to be carried in thousands of their stores significantly increases everyone's risk of being a victim of gun violence. Open and concealed carry are among the reasons there are 12,000 gun homicides each year in the U.S. If we had England's gun laws we would expect 375 gun homicides each year—97% less than we have. England's gun laws are based on protecting public safety, ours on maximizing sales for the gun industry…

Our boycott will reduce Starbucks’ stock price by an amount no rational company would allow.

When he bans guns, what's next? Then people can work on banning knives - how about nail files, pens, pencils, ...then what should we do about toothbrushes?? (after all they can be sharpened into a point)... yes, I'm being ridiculous to prove a point. Freedoms can be taken away little by little and before you know it they're gone.

Honestly, I'm glad I heard about this boycott - I don't drink coffee and I don't go to Starbucks very often, but I'll make the trip on Valentine's day...heck, maybe I'll buy 3: one for me, my husband and one to just throw out.

Mailbox

I have no idea if this is real, but it would be pretty funny to put out as a mailbox. It would never fly in our HOA, but maybe I can talk my parents into getting one. HaHa!

Doctors Asking About Guns!??

Doctors, groups clash over asking patients about firearms...
By Rita Rubin, USA TODAY

Three states are considering laws that would penalize doctors and other health care providers for asking patients or their parents whether they have a gun at home.

The National Rifle Association and other pro-gun interest groups argue that doctors violate patients' Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms by inquiring about gun ownership. Doctors say they ask only because of safety concerns. Prohibiting them from asking about guns likely violates the First Amendment, at least one constitutional law expert says.

Two weeks ago, the Florida Legislature became the first to pass such legislation. Republican Gov. Rick Scott, known to support gun rights, is expected to sign it. A similar law moved out of committee in the Alabama House of Representatives April 21, while another remains in committee in the North Carolina Senate.

The American Academy of Pediatrics' position on firearm-related injuries states "the absence of guns from children's homes and communities is the most reliable and effective measure to prevent firearm-related injuries" to them.

Timothy Wheeler, a retired surgeon in Upland, Calif., founder and director of Doctors for Responsible Gun Ownership, cites the position statement as proof that pediatricians want to ban firearms. Pediatric residents "think it's normal to ask about guns in the home," he says. "They don't understand that it is an ethical boundary violation."

Louis St. Petery, a Tallahassee pediatric cardiologist and executive vice president of the Florida Pediatric Society, says prevention, not politics, drives children's doctors to inquire about firearms. "We have a gun in our home," St. Petery says. "I'm not against guns."

The first funeral of a patient he ever attended was that of a 2-year-old who was shot and killed at home by a 5-year-old sibling, St. Petery says. "I'm afraid that some people are going to stop asking" because of the new legislation, which imposes a $500 fine for the first violation, he says. "As a result, I think more children will be injured and killed by improperly stored firearms."

Pippa Abston, a Huntsville, Ala., pediatrician , blogged a few weeks ago, "Dear NRA, You are not the Boss of me!"

"We're not talking to parents about gun control," Abston said in an interview. "We're talking about safety."

She says she worries lawmakers will try to restrict doctors' freedom to talk to patients about other "hot button" issues, such as vaccines.

Constitutional law expert Erwin Chemerinsky of the University of California-Irvine says banning doctors from asking about guns likely is unconstitutional because it restricts speech on the basis of content, which is "allowed only if it serves a compelling interest and there is no other way to achieve it."

I had no idea this was going on. I can understand the idea of asking because there are some people who are not educated about gun safety, but where will it stop? Think about what else doctors could ask - driving habits, television choices, internet viewing, etc. Should we make a LAW telling doctors they will be fined for asking? I don't think so. You have every right to tell the doctor it's none of their business.

How far do we let things go? Another hot-button issue: there's a lot of drama over cell phone searches without a warrant. Do you want an officer to search your cell phone if you get pulled over? Where does THAT stop? Will they then be allowed to search your laptop and/or camera if it's in your car also? This stuff needs to stop before it even begins.

New Adventure for 2011

I started this blog for Doug, because...well... He loves guns!
********
We're looking into starting a new business and hopefully we can get everything squared away during the first half of this year.
********
The title of the blog and the added pictures and quotes pretty much give away what the business will be about, but just in case you aren't sure - Doug will be getting his Federal Firearms License and wants to be a gun dealer. Hopefully we will also get to a place were he can repair and/or do whatever people might need for their guns.
********
I'm excited for Doug's new adventure, it's not terribly often that people can follow their passion and earn money while doing it.

Gun Control is Using Both Hands

I have a very strict gun control policy: if there’s a gun around, I want to be in control of it.
~Clint Eastwood

One loves to possess arms, though they hope never to have occasion for them.
~Thomas Jefferson

Gun control is like trying to reduce drunk driving by making it tougher for sober people to own cars.

25 States allow anyone to buy a gun, strap it on, and walk down the street with no permit of any kind: some say it's crazy. However, 4 out of 5 US murders are committed in the other half of the country: so who is crazy?
~Andrew Ford

If the Government doesn't trust us with our guns, why should we trust them with theirs?
